Transportation Tips

Before we pick up your vessel, there are a few very important items to address when it comes to shipping a boat or yacht down the interstate.  Failure to properly prepare your boat could result in damages or lost items.  In most cases your marina can properly prepare your boat for shipping, but we advise that you as the owner take part in this process.  Doing so will provide additional peace of mind while your boat is being transported.

  • Remove all personal items including cash, valuables, passports, or anything else you may need during transport.
  • Be sure to secure all loose items in the cabin, console, radio box, and all other storage areas.
  • Store all cushions in a fishbox or in the cabin.
  • Secure all latches on doors, overhead storage, and fishboxes.
  • Empty any unnecessary fluids such as liquid waste and freshwater storage.
  • Turn battery select switch off.  (We recommend you do not disconnect the batteries in case outboards need to be raised or lowered.)
  • Lower antennas and secure any winged radar units on top of hardtop or t-top.
  • Finally, check the exterior of vessel for any scratches or blemishes.

Shrinkwrap is an excellent way to protect your vessel.  It will protect the helm and cockpit areas from wind damage as well as road grime and general dirt.  Vessels that are not wrapped will be delivered fairly dirty and Salter Marine is not liable for cleaning or detailing an unwrapped vessel.  Shrinkwrap will also protect any canvas from stretching due to wind resistance.  Remember, depending upon the size, your vessel may be traveling down the highway at 65 mph.  If your vessel is wrapped and the wrap begins to come loose, Salter Marine drivers do everything possible to save the wrap.  However, if it cannot be salvaged, our drivers will remove the wrap to prevent damage to your vessel.  As the owner, you will ALWAYS be notified if a driver boards your vessel for any reason.
